Skills, along with Quests and Interaction form the three fundamental pillars of RuneScape. Skills in RuneScape represent the ability of gamers to do any activity or genre of activities. And as expected, the level of any skill attained is dependent on the amount of effort and practice that is put in. Skill levels are one of the major factors that determine the status enjoyed by any gamer in the realm of RuneScape. Processing skills represent all those still sets that require raw material to be practiced. Raw materials achieved by executing extraction skills form the input raw material for processing skills. The list of processing skills include Cooking, Crafting, Fire making, Fletching, Runecrafting, Smithing and Herblore.

The last set of skills, also termed as Independent Skills, include Agility, Construction, Hunter, Slayer and Thieving. These skills cater to various tasks required to complete various quests, and increases the chances of survival of the player in dangerous situations. All these skills are available to only members, and are out of bounds for free gamers.

The highest level attained in any skill is level 99, and requires high level of competence. Players achieving this highest possible level are awarded with capes of achievement, and are regarded as the ultimate symbol of excellence for gamers.
